Pianist, composer, bandleader and arranger Martin Fondse is the new artistic director of the Sena National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NJJO).

NJJO it is more than a bridge between school and practice. The experiences of the participants in the areas of musical collaboration, personal coaching, program level, prestige of the venues and festivals, offer a unique value and can be decisive for the rest of their musical, creative and social career.

The repertoire will consist of new and existing work of the versatile Fondse itself. For the 2015 edition Martin will compose new works to his ever-evolving Jazz Orchestra suite ‘City Lights’.

The natural beauty of his home town in Brazil, the hospitality of Brazilians and his personal life experiences are some of the themes that inspired Morais to create ‘Talism?’, a project featuring his original music that will be on tour in June 2014.

The singer-songwriter Morais, aka Wilson Matuoka, was born in the Brazilian city Atibaia, in the country side of S?o Paulo State. Since an early age music became his passion. With compositions such as “Naves Azuis” and “Fio D’água”, which contain lyrics by his wife Neusa Raphael de Toledo Matuoka, Morais has been awarded several prizes. These compositions are also part of the repertoire of Talism?. Besides being a natural gifted musician and the owner of a powerful voice, Morais is also an artist with a heart for culture and education. He founded the “Clube da Música Atibaia” in 2000, an organization that’s both a national and international platform for musicians from the region of Atibaia.

The project “Talism?” is a tribute to ‘Pedra Grande’ (Big Rock), the main symbol of the city of Atibaia. Based on the CD with the same name, which was launched in September 2013 in one of the main jazz houses in Europe, the BimHuis in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

It was also through “Clube da Música Atibaia” that Morais met the Dutch pianist, composer and arranger Martin Fondse, with whom he shares the stage in the project Talism?. Fondse is one of Holland’s most cherished composers. His prowess as composer allows him to continually break new ground, and combine different styles in his work, establishing a remarkable balance between composition, improvisation, dialogue and personal expression. He has been awarded several international prizes (including Edison Award 2012). Martin worked with musicians like Basement Jaxx, Lenine, Terry Bozzio, Peter Erskine, Doudou N?Diaye Rose, Pat Metheny and George Duke.

The CD featured guest appearances by renowned musicians such as cellist Ernst Reijseger (composer of the soundtracks of the films of Werner Herzog) and Annie Tangberg (Metropole Orchestra), American opera singer Claron McFadden, plus the Martin Fondse Project orchestra.

“The songs on ‘Talism?’ are inviting you to listen to the CD many times. And the sambas are contagious”

THE BRIDGE

Also in 2015 there are plans to record and perform with our successful project The Bridge. It brought us to various countries, festivals and venues. Highlights were our Brazilian Tour in 2013, the European Tour in 2014 (with concert at the famous North Sea Jazz Festival) and last but not least our sold out performance at Summerstage New York in Central Park.

We certainly keep you updated!

Celebrating 30-year career in 2013 Lenine joins the Dutch maestro Martin Fondse and his Orchestra for a European tour.
A symbolic landmark for the historical relationship between Brazil and The Netherlands is the Maurício de Nassau Bridge in Recife, which is a perfect replica of the bridge crossing the Amstel river in Amsterdam. This landmark has been the source of inspiration to create ‘The Bridge’, joining the Brazilian musician Lenine and Martin Fondse Orchestra. In May they toured in The Netherlands, Germany and Portugal. In October 2013 ‘The Bridge’ comes to Brazil!
‘The Bridge’ celebrates Lenine’s 30-year career in 2013, bringing together memorable milestones of his career.

Both born on an island, Lenine and Martin Fondse cross the transatlantic bridge. ‘The bridge is neither to go nor to come, the bridge is the crossing…’ as in the song that inspired the show’s concept. The repertoire consists of highlights from Lenine’s career, such as Jack Soul Brasileiro, Paciência and A Ponte, as well as new work by Martin Fondse, winner of Edison Award – Jazz National 2012.
Martin Fondse Orchestra (previously Starvinsky Orchestra) is a big band and classical ensemble in one. It has its roots in jazz, complimented by elements from pop, film and classical music creating a contemporary world of music merging modern styles and influences in a distinctive, energetic and humoristic style.
